This print is beautiful. It's a commonly depicted subject, but it is very special. The composition, tonal quality, and movement are exceptional and evocative. The piece is true to it's title... breathtaking!

The side-wheeler gunboat was a riverboat powered by a steam engine that drove paddle wheels to propel the craft through the water. In antiquity, Paddle wheelers followed the development of poles, oars and sails, where the first uses were wheelers driven by animals or humans. Side-wheelers were extensively used a gun boats during the civil war. Some of these were armored. Confederate gunboats were protected by bales of cotton on deck that caused cannonballs to bounce off the ship. Sharpshooters would fire from behind the bales.
